The San Jose Earthquakes fell short against Liga MX side Club Tijuana, losing 2-1 in an international friendly at PayPal Park on Wednesday night.
The opener arrived in the sixth minute for Tijuana when Adonis Preciado headed the ball in from a corner kick taken by Ignacio Rivero, making it 1-0 for the visitors. A PayPal Park packed with Xolos fans erupted in celebration.
The Earthquakes answered quickly with a dangerous attack in the 10th minute, when Timo crossed the ball from the left wing and Jamar Ricketts nearly headed it in at the back post. Keeping the pressure on, the Quakes equalized in the 16th minute — Preston Judd recovered the ball on the right wing and played it into the box for Beau Leroux, who took one touch and finished to make it 1-1.
Preciado was unplayable. Two goals, both clinical — that's the quality you expect from Liga MX.
In the final moments of the first half, Xolos recaptured the lead through Preciado once again. He collected the ball on the left wing, cut inside, and curled a stunning strike into the far post past Quakes goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. to make it 2-1 heading into the break.
To start the second half, San Jose subbed out their entire starting eleven. The second wave of Quakes created chances quickly — in the 48th minute, Jack Skahan fired a long-range effort from the edge of the box that was deflected just over the crossbar. In the 62nd minute, Club Tijuana made wholesale changes of their own. As time wound down, the Quakes had their opportunities to level the match, but they could not find the back of the net.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for Tijuana away from home, a positive result ahead of their upcoming Liga MX campaign.
